About Pyeongtaek Food & Fun

South of Seoul volunteers support the Pyeongtaek Food & Fun Facebook community which provides information and support for the international population of Pyeongtaek and surrounding areas. Therefore, group members share posts related to restaurants, hobbies, events, gatherings, and more.

South of Seoul volunteers admin and moderate the group based on the values of equity, inclusion, anti-bullying, and non-violent communication.

About Food & Fun Fab Four Awards

Starting in November 2022, South of Seoul began partnering with local businesses to create the Fab Four Awards. Each month four Pyeongtaek Food & Fun contributors are selected for their contributions to the community. In total, we currently have 23 local businesses that will be offering rewards to the winners.

Thinking about joining Pyeongtaek Living 101 but want to know more about the program? Here is a recap of the first course in Paengseong, Pyeongtaek. TLD;R It’s been a lot of fun and a lot of information.

About Pyeongtaek Living 101

First, let’s introduce the FREE Pyeongtaek Living 101 course since you may not know what it is. The Pyeongtaek Living 101 Course is a program hosted by the International Exchange Foundation (PIEF) and funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Pyeongtaek City Government.

The Pyeongtaek Living 101 program has operated for 3 years. The goal of the program is to help international residents, especially US military-affiliated people, live more comfortably in Pyeongtaek. This means the class seeks to empower attendees with tools, information, and ideas for living their best lives.

In 2024, South of Seoul joined the effort and helped to create the curriculum for the 2024 Pyeongtaek Living 101 Courses. It’s PIEF’s goal to have information specifically focused on the Pyeongtaek area and this is our volunteer’s specialty. We feel honored to help with this effort and support our community more completely than just through blogs and social media. We all feel invested in making sure it’s the best program of its kind.

The content of the course includes a deep dive into topics that impact living a comfortable life in Pyeongtaek. Topics include how to use Naver to learn more about Pyeongtaek, navigate parking, Foreign Registration Cards, sourcing information through Naver, and common culture shock struggles. Actually, the list is so long it’s hard to fit here. So far, the class has covered the topics of Residency and Navigating Pyeongtaek-si

The Class Vibes in 2024

The Paengseong Pyeongtaek Living 101 Course attendees have been wonderful and very involved. Each week they bring their questions and take lots of notes. They’ve also been bringing their experiences to the table to help each other learn. Their interest in learning more about the local area has kept us all on our toes as we strive to provide specific and helpful solutions and tools.

Also, the good vibes grow each week as the puzzle pieces come together. As everyone gets more comfortable with the information and sees how it can impact their lives, they get more animated and excited. It’s fun to watch each person have ah-ha moments as they learn information that meets individual needs.

Workshopping

One of the best parts of each class has to be the time spent workshopping. Since the Pyeontaek Living 101 Course offers very localized and practical content, we also strive to make such content feel fully accessible and that means hands-on work. Attendees spend time workshopping:

• How to use Naver
• Tricks for finding information even if you don’t speak Korean
• The best ways to leverage Papago and Naver translate
• Solutions for finding help when help is needed

Last week the 101-2: Pyeongtaek-si class ran long since attendees needed additional support in learning how to use tools. For example, attendees wanted to know how to:

• Set Naver to a gas/ car type for accurate toll costs

The Local Snacks

Our courses, it’s not all work. We also have some fun. For example, each week we introduce different foods that can be found around Pyeongtaek. During the 101-1: Residency Class attendees sampled different flavors of kimpbap including:

• Bulgogi
• Shrimp
• Pork cutlet
• Galbi
• Traditional

It’s not often attendees get to try some of these more unique kimbap flavors and it opened their eyes to a whole new world of possibilities.

During the 101-2: Pyeongtaek-si classes students sampled different flavors of South African meat pies and the sausage rolls from Biltong Box. It’s our goal to introduce all aspects of the wider Pyeongtaek-si community which includes cultural diversity. In Pyeongtaek we are lucky to have access to food from all over the world in one small community.

The Childcare

The kids have been having a wonderful time. While parents study, the kids attending the Pyeongtaek Living 101 Course can choose to learn along with their families or play together with attending staff. Kids have been enjoying their own snack time, coloring books, games, and each other’s company.

Please note that we don’t like to share kids in our information so we haven’t shared many images. We have around 7-10 kids coming each week. It’s been great to provide parents with this type of support.

About Pyeongtaek Living 101

The Pyeongtaek International Exchange Foundation (PIEF) founded Pyeongtaek Living 101 to support international residents and SOFA members. PIEF seeks to help such people connect with the resources, services, and experiences available in Pyeongtaek-si. Pyeongtaek Living 101 covers topics such as banking, housing, transportation, and building a community. Each year PIEF strives to make the course more specific to local community needs

In 2024, Pyeongtaek Living 101 expanded into a four-class course. The Course will be offered 3 times a year at the Paengseong PIEF and Songtan PIEF Centers. For each session, one course will be provided as an Intensive Course (classes scheduled Mon-Thursday for 1 week) and a Monthly Course (Classes scheduled every Thursday for 4 weeks)

About the 2024 Pyeongtaek Living 101 Curriculum

PIEF consulted with our South of Seoul volunteers to develop the 2024 Pyeongtaek Living 101 Course Curriculum. PIEF worked with our group to identify specific concerns related to the international community in the Pyeongtaek area. Our volunteers based their curriculum-related advice on over a decade of research conducted through our community programs and community Facebook groups.

PIEF supported curriculum development by providing South of Seoul volunteers access to direct information. For example, we could more easily request specific details and answers to questions from local police, emergency responders, and government offices. Attending all of the classes below will help you have a much greater understanding of how to build the life you want to live in Pyeongtaek-si.

Class 1 Residency

The first class of the course talks about residency in South Korea. We explore where to search for information and how to get access to South Korean systems that help you with:

• shopping online
• make dinner reservations
• reserve hotels and pensions
• banking
• identity verification
• enrolling kids in schools

Class 2: Pyeongtaek

Learn about Pyeongtaek from international residents who have lived in South Korea for over 13 years. They will cover information such as:

• Introduction to Pyeongtaek
• Overview of Neighborhoods
• Public Transportation
• Parking
• City Events and Event Locations
• Parks
• Libraries
• Restaurants
• Things to Do

While introducing the information, they will teach you how to use apps like Naver maps to access things more smoothly to make life easier.

Class 3: Home & Living

The Home and Living class will be a deep dive into managing your daily life in Pyeongtaek-si . We will explore apps and talk about systems for the following topics:

• Introduction to Home and Living Content
• Grocery Shopping
• Recycling
• Disposing of large items like furniture
• Spring cleaning and home maintenance
• Education Options
• Personal Transportation

Class 4: Building Community and Friendships

The Building Community and Friendships class will focus on various communities you can connect with across Pyeongtaek-si. It’s the perfect class for those who want to build strong connections across the community while living in Pyeongtaek:

• Introduction to Communities and Groups for International Residents
• Overview of different community organizations in Pyeongtaek
• Overview of volunteer opportunities
• Tips for Building Community

In addition to partnering on curriculum development, PIEF and South of Seoul created a team of speakers, special guests, and volunteers with extensive localized knowledge. What is South of Seoul?

Founded in 2015, the South of Seoul (SOS) volunteer organization supports ex-pats living outside Seoul. The SOS volunteers manage multiple Facebook groups, the South of Seoul Facebook page, the South of Seoul blog, the SOS Public Health Program, and the South of Seoul smartphone app.

Our volunteers adore the rich life we live south of Seoul, and we feel honored to help new arrivals discover the hidden magic it holds. Pyeongtaek is a rewarding mix of city life and country life which can make it a challenge for new arrivals since access may feel complicated. However, with a little information like the ‘Best of Pyeongtaek Poll Winners’ list, Pyeongtaek-si can be a delightful place for new arrivals and long-term international residents alike.

What is the South of Seoul Best of Pyeongtaek Poll?

South of Seoul is proud to host the 7th Annual Best of Pyeongtaek Poll to celebrate our delicious and delightful community. The Best of Pyeongtaek Awards provide a chance for the international community to support their favorite people and places.

How did the South of Seoul Best of Pyeongtaek Poll change in 2023?

For 2023, South of Seoul added a few new categories and withdrew a few to respond to the changes in our community’s dining needs and culinary interests. Since SOS volunteers stay closely connected with the community, we adjust the categories each year to reflect changes in the community. We actively assess the current needs of the international community by analyzing the information and questions shared in our various community groups. Such an agile program design means the Best of Pyeongtaek Poll is a little different each year.

Who votes in the Best of Pyeongtaek Poll?

The South of Seoul Best of Pyeongtaek poll is open to the public. We make every feasible effort to reach outside the South of Seoul community into the communities around us to gain an authentic insight into the preferences of English-speaking international residents in Pyeongtaek. SOS volunteers feel confirmation bias does not serve the greater good, so we seek opinions outside of our own sphere of influence. We want the Best of Pyeongtaek Poll to hold accurate information, whether that information matches our beliefs or not.

South of Seoul limits each business to 3 wins. We do this to keep the poll results engaging, helpful, and informative. In addition, since write-in votes are allowed, and some businesses may have an overwhelming advantage due to location and language ability, limiting the number of wins per business to 3 categories creates a better experience for all involved.

South of Seoul volunteers want to meet the community’s authentic needs. Therefore, the South of Seoul Best of Pyeongtaek Poll provides us with the insight we need by reflecting on the opinions of others. That said, nothing about this poll is scientific. It is for fun and for community development. We level the playing field by leaving the poll open for two weeks so that community members can vote once a day and deeply support the people and businesses they love. Over 250 ballots were cast in the poll in 2019, over 320 were cast in 2021, and over 730 were submitted in 2022.

What did you learn from the Best of Pyeongtaek Poll in 2023?

When reviewing the responses to The Best of Pyeongtaek 2023 poll, we found that English-speaking residents’ comfort zone in Pyeongtaek continued to expand! We can see this trend based on the increasing votes for locations beyond Sinjang-dong and Anjeong-ri. This trend started in 2018 and continues to grow each year. We love to see the international community comfortably exploring more areas across Pyeongtaek-si.

In 2023, 37% of Best of Pyeongtaek winners are located away from US military bases. That’s a 4% increase from 2023. Each year more votes are cast for businesses that 1) aren’t English-dominant or 2) are located outside the Songtan/Sinjang-dong or Paengseong-eup areas.

In 2023, 33% of Best of Pyeongtaek winners won for the first time. Many new businesses opened after the end of the pandemic and many old favorites closed. Our community has seen a great deal of change in the last year and we expect to see a lot more as Pyeongtaek continues to grow.

In 2023, we learned that South of Seoul continues to be a leader in information in Pyeongtaek. Our Pyeongtaek Food & Fun Facebook Group has been a powerhouse of information with the community that allows us all to come together to support people every single day. The hard work of each Pyeongtaek Food & Fun member has driven the group to become one of the most influential places for international residents living in Pyeongtaek to gather information. 

We want to congratulate the SOS Technology Development Volunteers for continuing to build the South of Seoul app. We never imagined a volunteer-built app could compete in Pyeongtaek with giants like Naver, Kakao, Google, and Facebook. Especially since the Android version of the South of Seoul app currently doesn’t load. Thankfully, in 2023 our team continued to work on the new version of the South of Seoul app which should be available to the public in early 2024.

In 2023, Best of Pyeongtaek Poll participants prioritized the following when choosing a restaurant 1) Parking, 2) Affordability, 3) Recommended by A friend, 4) English Menu Available, and 5) Healthy Food Options.

The English-speaking residents of Pyeongtaek have spoken and chosen Paengseong-eup (this includes Anjeongri-ri). This is the first win for Paengseong (Anjeongri) as in the past, Sosabeol has swept all of the votes for Best “Date Night” Neighborhood, Best “Family” Neighborhood, and Best “Hangout” Neighborhood.

So, if you want to hang out with friends or find new friends, maybe consider visiting Anjeong-ri for an evening of bar hopping and evening fun.

South of Seoul Book Club

South of Seoul volunteers take their book recommendations and book list reading seriously. In order to create a solid reading we use the following commitments as a rubric for our choices.

Commitment to Accessibility

South of Seoul volunteers take book accessibility into consideration when recommending titles. We consider:

• Purchasable in English In Korea: Many translated titles can’t actually be purchased in English in Korea. This usually means an online purchase as an e-book or audiobook. This does not mean available in Korean bookstores in English.
• Audio Version Available: Many people find audiobooks easier to consume.
• Online Versions.: International residents can’t afford to travel with many books and many books may not be available in digital form from within Korea.

Commitment to Diverse Lived Experiences

South of Seoul volunteers seek to put lived experiences at the forefront of their recommendation choices. When considering authors we look for such things as:

• Korean authors writing about their lived experiences in Korea.
• International residents writing about their lived experiences in South Korea.
• Ethnic Koreans writing about their lived experience in other countries.

Reading about Korean culture from a variety of perspectives may provide readers with a greater understanding of the country and culture.

Commitment to Supporting Mental Health

South of Seoul also includes book recommendations that support the lives and mental health of our community. This means that books may tackle the issues related to living between cultures. This may include topics such as culture shock, language, relationships, and more.
